Jean Dominique Bauby (23 April 1952 – 9 March 1997) was a French journalist, author, and editor of the French fashion magazine Elle. Jean had a stroke in December 1995 which resulted in almost complete paralysis which is also called “locked-in syndrome”. He learned “partner assisted scanning” and with the help of Claude Mendibil, a ghostwriter and freelance book editor, wrote his book. She recited the alphabet until Bauby blinked at the correct letter, and recorded the 130-page manuscript letter by letter over the course of two months, working three hours a day, seven days a week. Thus the book “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death” (https://amzn.to/3CzxZWD) was written and published in March 1997, just a few days before his death.
